{"id":13452,"date":"2016-08-19T01:19:46","date_gmt":"2016-08-19T05:19:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bullhorn.com\/au\/?p=13452"},"modified":"2019-03-02T08:46:17","modified_gmt":"2019-03-01T21:46:17","slug":"singaporean-candidates-demand-innovation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bullhorn.com\/au\/blog\/singaporean-candidates-demand-innovation\/","title":{"rendered":"Singaporean Candidates Demand Innovation"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Singapore Sees Increased Demand for Innovation but Some are Resistant<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Last month, Hudson released it\u2019s \u2018<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/hudson.sg\/latest-thinking\/the-hudson-report\/hudson-report-h1-2016\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Hudson Report: Forward Focus 2016<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019, which highlights trends within Singapore\u2019s employment landscape, and the results are intriguing. Among the findings is an insight into Singapore\u2019s current discrepancy between employee and employer expectations, particularly when it comes to \u2018innovation\u2019. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Hudson report found that 88 percent of Singaporean organisations believe they drive and reward innovation. As a contrast, only 24 percent of employees working at these organisations agreed \u2014 a worrying discrepancy. To add fuel to the fire, 44 percent of candidates plan to move on to new positions within the next year which is set to create a highly liquid employment landscape. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a new wave of millennial job seekers enter the market, the biggest opportunity for Singaporean businesses to drive innovation lies within adopting new technology. Singaporean candidates are increasingly valuing working for progressive organisations that are \u2018mission oriented\u2019 and technologically innovative but it\u2019s clear that many are unsatisfied with their options.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Singapore has among the best technology infrastructure in the world yet there seems to be a clear gap between businesses who\u2019re embracing technology and those who are neglecting it. The Singaporean government has attempted to respond to this trend by offering numerous grants. The Productivity and Innovation Credit (PIC), for example, offers business up to $400,000 SGD which can be used for a number of technology and productivity related reasons.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With what seems like the perfect circumstances to invest in technology, one can\u2019t help but wonder why so many Singaporean businesses haven\u2019t yet taken advantage. Bullhorn\u2019s Director of Sales Asia, and long time Singapore resident, <a href=\"https:\/\/sg.linkedin.com\/in\/kevin-lam-888886a\" target=\"_blank\">Kevin Lam<\/a>, believes the market is actually in the midst of a \u2018culture disruption\u2019. Commenting on the recent trends, he said:<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><b><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"144\" height=\"146\" class=\"size-full wp-image-13454 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bullhorn.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/08\/kevin.png\" alt=\"kevin\" \/>\u201c<\/b><b><i>Singaporean businesses tend to fall into two categories. On one hand, you\u2019ve got new-blood entrepreneurs who embrace technology. On the other, you have what I would call more \u2018classical\u2019 businesses, those that are firmly set in their ways and often resistant to change.<br \/>\n<\/i><\/b><b><i><br \/>\n<\/i><\/b><b><i>The \u2018traditional Singaporean business\u2019 has prospered for generations by focusing on building long-term relationships while remaining relatively frugal with its finances. Many of these businesses still carry the ideal that technology falls into the category of an \u2018unnecessary luxury\u2019.<br \/>\n<\/i><\/b><b><i><br \/>\n<\/i><\/b><b><i>But we\u2019re in the midst of great technology-driven change. As businesses begin to view technology as an asset worth investing in, adoption and competition will rise. Those that don&#8217;t adapt will soon be left behind. This is especially applicable for recruitment agencies facing some of the highest employee churn rates in Singapore&#8217;s corporate sector.<\/i><\/b><b><i><br \/>\n<\/i><\/b><b><i><br \/>\n<\/i><\/b><b><i>The Singaporean government understands this and has invested considerably into changing attitudes on technology spending. I\u2019m excited at the economical growth of our region and the idea of change. The next step is to ensure we embrace the very best of technologies to fuel it.\u201d <\/i><\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According&nbsp;to Hudson\u2019s report, 89 percent of Singaporeans are either actively looking for a new role or are willing to consider alternatives. For recruitment agencies, this could mean an abundance of qualified yet highly selective candidates.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like other sectors, the Singaporean recruitment industry has seen pressure to adapt to changing candidate demands. Candidates are becoming increasingly mobile, they\u2019re using technology to engage with agencies and expect agencies to \u2018speak their language\u2019.
