{"id":15505,"date":"2017-04-18T23:28:47","date_gmt":"2017-04-19T03:28:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bullhorn.com\/au\/?p=15505"},"modified":"2017-04-19T11:41:00","modified_gmt":"2017-04-19T15:41:00","slug":"8-top-tips-new-recruiters","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bullhorn.com\/au\/blog\/8-top-tips-new-recruiters\/","title":{"rendered":"8 Top Tips for New Recruiters"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Starting out in recruitment is both exciting and daunting &#8211; so much to do, to learn and just when you think you have the hang of it there\u2019s another part of the process to deal with. So, here are 8 top tips for first-time recruiters, which I wish I had known when I started out:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>1. Take a breath and slow down<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seriously, take a day or a weekend to really take a step back and look at your work. It\u2019s easy to get caught up in hitting KPI targets and quick wins, but try not to pat yourself on the back until you\u2019ve made the placement.\u00a0Take time to really visit your actions and analyse \u2018what went right\/wrong?\u2019 If you can\u2019t clearly answer that question, find out from colleagues or read a sales book about the values of those actions and desired outcomes.\u00a0There are tons of blogs and resources that can explain the value of each type of call and best practices to obtain the best results. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here\u2019s a couple of sources I\u2019ve used: <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.saleshacker.com\/library\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">https:\/\/www.saleshacker.com\/library\/<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/grantcardone.com\/blogs\/grantcardone\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">https:\/\/grantcardone.com\/blogs\/grantcardone<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.salesforlife.com\/blog\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/www.salesforlife.com\/blog<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>2. Leverage your colleagues networks (Cross-sell)<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most new recruitment consultants tend to recruit for support or junior roles, generally working with \u2018non-decision makers.\u2019 Other recruiters and senior colleagues will have better\/stronger relationships and warm introductions are always better than cold introductions.\u00a0Just because someone or a business isn\u2019t on the database, doesn\u2019t mean someone doesn\u2019t have a personal relationship.\u00a0Ask early and often, and don\u2019t forget <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bullhorn.com\/au\/blog\/2017\/02\/3-reasons-applicant-tracking-system-worth-time\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">your time is valuable<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>3. Don\u2019t clutter the database<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although others will appreciate the diligent data entry, avoid adding noise to the system.\u00a0Ten great contacts are better than one hundred that aren\u2019t qualified to be on the system.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>4. Develop your own relationships<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is more of a reminder.\u00a0It\u2019s really easy to get comfortable with taking orders for new jobs, but talent movement and change can have massive effect on future revenue.\u00a0If you aren\u2019t maintaining and building new relationships, you are on your heels.\u00a0The managers you work with, may not stay with that business or always be in a hiring position.\u00a0What would happen if your top three contacts left the industry tomorrow?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you aren\u2019t doing it already, go out and meet with your clients and ask questions to get to know their business.\u00a0Like any relationship, the more time you invest, the more return you will get.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>5. Don\u2019t forget to qualify<\/b><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/gregsavage.com.au\/the-savage-truth\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Greg Savage<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">an established global recruitment leader <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recently reminded me that the first and most important questions to ask are:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How long has this position been open?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What have you done so far to fill this position?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you met my candidates tomorrow, could you make an offer?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Never assume that you know the answers to these questions.\u00a0Getting a job to work on is great, but if it doesn\u2019t turn into a fee, what is the point?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>6. Never negotiate after you\u2019ve started the search<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This will never go well.\u00a0Sure, there are some creative solutions, but if you aren\u2019t comfortable in these situations \u2013 your creative juices may not be flowing.\u00a0It can be confrontational and it can hurt relationships.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you find that you are commonly in late stage negotiations, send over your rates early on and get a signature.\u00a0It doesn\u2019t have to be your full T&amp;C\u2019s, it just needs to be an acknowledgement that they know you are working on their job.\u00a0If you can\u2019t\u00a0get this, you\u2019re probably not working on a real job.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>7. Ask for more<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Don\u2019t forget to ask for a referral or additional introductions.\u00a0It\u2019s easier to ask for more when people are happy with your work, instead of when you need it.\u00a0\u201cYou don\u2019t make friends in times of crisis.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>8. Pay it forward<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When possible, reward people for working with you.\u00a0\u00a0Lunch, drinks, sweets &amp; treats go a long way.\u00a0Treat others the way you want to be treated and don\u2019t be in a one sided relationship.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are a ton of other basic recruitment best practice tips, but these are the ones that would I wish I had to hand when I started in recruitment.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>What would you add to the list? <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is there something that would have helped you over the line, that you can pay forward now?
