In fact, <a href=\"https:\/\/harrierhumancapital.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Harrier Human Capital<\/a> CEO Kelly Quirk <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortlist.net.au\/nl06_news_selected.php?act=2&amp;nav=11&amp;selkey=56836&amp;utm_content=article+headline\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">argues<\/a> that in many areas, the perceived skills gap is more of a search gap and urges recruiters to find ways to look for talent more effectively. While no one is denying that there are shortage areas, knowing how to find candidates who aren\u2019t immediately on the radar is an invaluable skill. So, which strategies can you employ to maximise your chances of filling vacancies?<\/p>\n<h3>Utilise Talent Pools<\/h3>\n<p>The government updates the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.homeaffairs.gov.au\/trav\/work\/work\/skills-assessment-and-assessing-authorities\/skilled-occupations-lists\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">shortage professions<\/a> on the visa occupation list every six months, meaning an occupation could suddenly be removed. If you are relying heavily on overseas workers to fill vacancies, recruiting them may become even more challenging. Therefore, it\u2019s vital to build home-grown candidate communities now. If talent isn\u2019t easy to find, a more strategic approach to tapping into talent pools is needed. Recruiters need to look at areas where skills seem in short supply and think creatively about where to find those candidates. For example, cybersecurity is a rapidly growing area of demand, as are a wide number of roles within the tourism industry. If your agency operates sectors such as these, are you present at the kind of networking events where these professionals gather? Do you target graduates of particular university courses? Do you advertise in the publications that they read and on the forums that they use? Is your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bullhorn.com\/au\/blog\/2017\/10\/magnificent-seven-top-tips-effective-recruitment-marketing\/?utm_source=blog&amp;utm_medium=website\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">marketing content<\/a> providing tailored, value-added content to these potential recruits? And are you using social media to tap into these talent pools?<\/p>\n<h3>Uncover Less Obvious Candidates<\/h3>\n<p>It\u2019s obviously important not to fall into the trap of showing unconscious bias when it comes to selecting candidates that you think will be the right cultural fit for your clients. However, many recruiters do let the existing makeup of the workforce influence their decisions about the kind of people that would slot in, when clients\u2019 businesses would actually <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hcamag.com\/opinion\/opinion-why-everyone-benefits-from-dandi-249424.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">benefit<\/a> from more diversity. Therefore, recruiters should be looking beyond the \u2018usual suspects\u2019 and actively targeting more diverse groups.<\/p>\n<p>For example, with a rapidly <a href=\"http:\/\/www.righttraining.com.au\/the-impact-of-the-aging-population-on-the-health-workforce-in-australia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">aging population<\/a> and over 65s projected to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abs.gov.au\/ausstats\/abs@.nsf\/Lookup\/3222.0main+features52012%20(base)%20to%202101\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">significantly increase in numbers<\/a> over the next 15 years, we can expect to see an increasing number of people retiring later or even \u2018un-retiring\u2019. Therefore, recruiters have a potential talent pool of experienced professionals which is often completely overlooked. Ex-services personnel are another great source of talent, yet 30% of Australian veterans are <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2017-10-05\/veterans-unemployment-rates-higher-than-national-average-report\/9017554\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">unemployed<\/a>. With employers increasingly embracing diversity, could pursuing less obvious talent pools help alleviate some of the talent shortages faced by your clients?<\/p>\n<h3>Consider Redeployment<\/h3>\n<p>With the gig economy continuing to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kellyservices.com.au\/gig-economy-how-free-agents-are-redefining-work\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">thrive<\/a> and increasing numbers of workers opting to work in more flexible ways, recruiters cannot underestimate the importance of an effective candidate experience.
