{"id":74950,"date":"2022-03-18T15:23:23","date_gmt":"2022-03-18T04:23:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bullhorn.com\/au\/?p=74950"},"modified":"2022-08-31T18:54:15","modified_gmt":"2022-08-31T08:54:15","slug":"how-to-make-a-four-day-week-a-reality","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bullhorn.com\/au\/blog\/how-to-make-a-four-day-week-a-reality\/","title":{"rendered":"How to Make a Four-Day Week a Reality for Your Recruitment Business"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At first glance, a four-day workweek may seem like a fantasy \u2013 an invention from some far-off, unattainable future.\u00a0 However, in the wake of the Great Resignation, a growing handful of organisations \u2013 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/business\/2022\/02\/17\/four-day-week-worker-burnout\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and even countries<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 are making this fantasy a reality.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">James Osborne of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.therecruitmentnetwork.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Recruitment Network<\/a> recently caught up with Kris Holland, Director of Marketing and Revenue Operations at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.charltonmorris.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Charlton Morris<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and Liam Thomas, Co-founder of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dataxconnect.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">DataX Connect<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/highfieldps.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Highfield Professional Solutions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, to discuss the challenges and benefits of implementing a four day week at their businesses.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can catch <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pages.bullhorn.com\/how-to-make-a-four-day-week-a-reality_On-Demand-Page.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a recording of the webinar here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or check out the recap below.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>What is a four-day week, and why consider it?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For both Charlton Morris and Highfield Professional Solutions, a four-day week means working Monday through Thursday, with regular, eight-hour workdays, and having every Friday off. \u201cA fundamental part of a four-day week is believing that you can do what you can do in five days in four,\u201d said Holland. After COVID, Holland and his team wanted to give their employees more flexibility, so this was a compromise to do just that.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe attitude,\u201d continues Holland, \u201cis very much the same in that if you have a client ring you on a Saturday, and it\u2019s something urgent \u2013 you\u2019ve got to arrange an interview or a phone call or something \u2013 then you will do it; it\u2019s a 24\/7 job. But we don\u2019t do proactive work on Friday \u2013 that is the day off, and that\u2019s when we start trying to leverage things like technology and automation to do that heavy lifting for us.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe wanted it to be a life-changing benefit,\u201d said Thomas, \u201cand a three-day weekend every weekend is a genuine life-changing benefit.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The goal for Thomas was that no clients or candidates would feel a negative impact from this \u2013 if someone is unavailable, there will always be someone picking up their work, and vice versa. \u201cBut,\u201d said Thomas, \u201cyou need the right people in the business and the culture to foster that collaboration and people having each other\u2019s backs.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>What does the process of rolling out a four-day week look like?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pre-COVID, a four-day week wouldn\u2019t have worked for Charlton Morris, said Thomas. \u201cPeople and data are the most important things, but if you don\u2019t have the right people, the right culture, if you\u2019re not genuinely a values-driven business where people will support each other and take care of your customers, this won\u2019t work. We had to do a huge amount of work on getting the values in place and ensuring the culture can do what we needed to do in a four-day week.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Highfield Professional Solutions embarked on a four-month trial of their four-day week, focused on learning. They regularly had presentations on productivity and return on effort and brought in Zoom speakers who are productivity experts. The trial also included regular meetings between leadership teams and stakeholders, with everyone encouraged to share productivity tips and tricks to create a collaborative and efficient culture for everybody.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe didn\u2019t announce our trial initially,\u201d said Holland. \u201cWe just did it behind the scenes for four months, and then when we decided we were going to go full time with it, we launched it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A crucial part of rolling out the four-day week was managing expectations, said Thomas. He also emphasised the importance of being collaborative and \u201cstaying in that flow state.\u201d He spoke on the importance of not simply replicating the flow of a five-day week but rather putting more into that Monday through Thursday.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>How did your technology stack enable you to roll out a four-day week?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Highfield Professional Solutions began implementing automation during their trial period. \u201cThe first thing we wanted to do was establish what we can do and achieve in a four-day week, and then see if there are any gaps that we need to fill in with automation and tech,\u201d he said. \u201cWhat we\u2019ve seen since has been really positive \u2013 it\u2019s much more of a soft approach with the automation, it\u2019s not doing, for example, new client outreach, or any of that high-risk stuff \u2013 it\u2019s just something that keeps things going when we\u2019re not around.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Elaborating on automated workflows that Highfield Professional Solutions utilises on Fridays, Holland spoke to the value of light touch communications automation. \u201cOne that you\u2019d be able to do would be getting quick interview feedback for a candidate that\u2019s had an interview, or you want to get some questions out \u2013 surveys are such a big part of it. And you can set automations based on the end time of an interview, make sure that something goes out an hour after that, and let them know in that email, \u2018I\u2019ll be following up with you, but what are your initial thoughts? What\u2019s your initial reaction? How did things go?\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Leveraging technology was instrumental to implementing a four-day week at Charlton Morris. \u201cWe use <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bullhorn.com\/au\/products\/bullhorn-analytics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bullhorn Analytics<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u201d said Thomas, \u201cthe same as Kris. But we haven\u2019t ventured into the full recruitment process automations; we still like to have that human touch.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Equally key for Charlton Morris was having tech and culture work hand-in-hand. \u201cPeople want to look after their customers,\u201d Thomas said. Anything that comes to his team on a Friday will naturally get picked up because of their collaborative, proactive culture. \u201cWe have a process in place to make sure our clients and candidates are getting the same experience as they would Monday through Thursday.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>What benefits have you seen as a result of implementing a four-day week?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thomas has seen applications to work at Charlton Morris through the roof \u2013 and not just folks who want to work one fewer day, but people who want to be part of a forward-thinking organisation that wants to do the right thing for their staff. \u201cWe\u2019re looking for \u2013 and finding \u2013 people who can fit five days\u2019 work into four.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Holland notes that there\u2019s been an increased focus on productivity and return on effort since implementing a four-day week: \u201cTime to fill\u2019s been dropping, increasing our fill rate by 25%. When your time becomes that much more valuable, you value what you do more.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Have there been any downsides?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cNot everyone can turn up that productivity dial,\u201d said Thomas. \u201cIt doesn\u2019t suit everybody.\u201d In terms of work-life balance, both Thomas and Holland found only positives, but they have found that a four-day week isn\u2019t suitable for everyone. Don\u2019t try it until you\u2019re sure you\u2019ve got the right people in the business.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBusiness does drop off on Friday,\u201d added Holland, \u201cbut there\u2019s always a drop off on Friday anyway.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Would you recommend a four-day week to other organisations? What advice would you offer to those looking to implement it?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPersonally, I\u2019d like to see this be more widespread,\u201d said Holland. Part of Holland\u2019s goals in implementing a four-day week was to change the way the world sees recruiting \u2013 to see it as a fast-paced, exciting industry that people want to join and in which they can build a career. While you can\u2019t avoid the pressures of the recruitment industry, Holland noted, a four-day workweek adds a nice incentive and makes recruitment a more attractive industry to be a part of.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For Thomas, it all comes back to values. \u201cOnce you have the right people,\u201d he added, \u201cmake sure your tech stack is aligned to run that four-day business and give your clients and candidates what they need over five days.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf you don\u2019t have the data and you don\u2019t have a starting point,\u201d added Holland, \u201cyou have nothing to measure it by. We\u2019ve spent a lot of time looking different types of business development and getting those segmented properly in Bullhorn so we can see what works more effectively.\u201d Holland finds that his team is now much more data-driven than before, \u201cwhich is traditionally where recruitment has not been at its best \u2013 it\u2019s very \u2018throw things at a wall and see what sticks.\u2019 We\u2019re now seeing what sticks and working backward.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do you have the right technology in place to automate your recruiting business?
