2,400% Increase in Department for Education Recruitment Spend

02 January 2018, London – Ministerial departments in the UK filled 77 percent of job vacancies on average during the 2016/17 financial year, according to Freedom of Information requests submitted by Bullhorn, the cloud computing company that helps staffing and recruitment organisations transform their businesses. This is a marked improvement (up by 49 percent) from 2014/15, when it was found that ministerial departments, on average, filled a mere 28 percent of available vacancies.

Bullhorn also requested information on total recruitment spend in the financial year 2016/17 from 24 government ministerial departments. It revealed that the Department for Education’s spend on recruitment has increased 2,433 percent in just two years.

Peter Linas, EVP of Corporate Development and International at Bullhorn, comments: “It’s very encouraging to see such a dramatic increase in the average fill-rate across ministerial departments. Recruiters are clearly succeeding in helping the government find much needed skills, with several departments boasting fill-rates of more than 90 percent.

“However, it’s also evident that other departments are not being quite so successful,” he adds. “It’s worrying to see, for example, the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy struggling to fill vacancies, as this may be a reflection of wider skills shortages in the key areas of science and research, energy and climate change, and industry and innovation – something that may get worse post-Brexit.

“Fundamental to increased fill-rates is the deployment of intelligent recruitment solutions: those that use the latest machine learning techniques to quickly find candidates with a high chance of succeeding in new roles, based on existing transferable skills.”
