What does AI actually mean for your business? In this series, Bullhorn\u2019s Jim Hegerich explores the basics of AI, the application of technology in recruitment and the ongoing requirements to <\/span><\/i>ensure<\/span> you get the intended, ongoing return on your AI investment.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

Every time I meet with leadership teams across the recruitment industry, we\u2019re asked the same question: \u201cWhat is your company doing with AI?\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The problem begins with that simple sentence.\u00a0 Many people know what AI stands for\u2014artificial intelligence\u2014but they quickly become lost when you ask them to define it.<\/span><\/p>\n

I\u2019m here to help. Let\u2019s start by defining some terms.\u00a0 This isn\u2019t all-encompassing, but it will set a framework that will allow us to speak the same language.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

AI Terms Recruitment Professionals Should Know<\/strong><\/b><\/h3>\n
    \n
  • AI:<\/strong> The use of programs that drive computers to \u201cthink & react\u201d like humans.\u00a0 Applications you\u2019re probably familiar with are speech recognition (think Siri), learning, planning, problem-solving (IBM\u2019s Watson dominating at chess) and perception (facial recognition\u2026and then some).<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Machine Learning:<\/strong> a component of AI, allows computers to respond to situations (in a human-like fashion) through analysis, self-training, observation & experience.\u00a0 At the basic level this means pattern & trend detection. This is learning based on examples rather than the traditional method in computing of using a predefined set of rules or algorithms.<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Analytics:<\/strong> the analysis of data and data patterns to improve decision making.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    AI Fundamentals: What Does This Mean For My Recruitment Business?<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Now that we agree on the basics, let\u2019s explore the fundamentals.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    In my world, this means,<\/span> \u201cWhat’s the business impact of AI-fueled software?\u201d Or as my clients in the recruitment industry would ask, \u201cThat sounds great but what\u2019s in it for me?\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    Here’s what it means for you: <\/span><\/p>\n

      \n
    • Connected business workflows that deliver a greater level of accuracy and speed without the need for someone you\u2019re paying to intervene.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
    • Continually improving, system-driven learning and decision-making automation.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
    • The ability to look at trends and pattern data as it relates to the health of your business.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
    • The information you need to invest your resources to achieve the best results based on your strategic objectives.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      Much of this technology is already in existence and operational, especially from an automation standpoint.\u00a0 Where it is going from here is the refinement for use in virtually unlimited operations and lines of business. It shouldn\u2019t be a surprise that those that choose to adapt and adopt will see a distinct competitive edge over those who view the use of this technology as a nice-to-have-down-the-road option.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

      An important note:<\/span> AI is not a functionality that you can just \u201cset and forget\u201d. Getting the most out of AI is like raising a child. You must feed and nurture them constantly.\u00a0 You have to make sure that they know the \u201crules of the game\u201d for success in life. You must always keep an eye out for changes in their behavior and provide feedback instantly to keep their \u201cprogramming\u201d on track to achieve the desired outcome.\u00a0 The oldest axiom in computing still applies: GIGO \u201cGarbage In, Garbage Out.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

      So how do you ensure you have a solid foundation that will allow your business to get the most out of AI? Stay tuned for the next entry in the series, where I’ll show the pitfalls of the ‘better, cheaper, faster’ mentality in recruitment, and how you can get ahead of the competition by thinking long-term.<\/p>\n
