Industries from IT to manufacturing are already reporting a rise in unfilled vacancies, and a <\/span><a style=\"line-height: 1.5\" href=\"http:\/\/www.consultancy.uk\/news\/685\/bcg-labour-mismatch-risks-10-trillion-of-unrealised-gdp\" target=\"_blank\">recent study <\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">observed that serious global labour shortages will begin to happen from 2020 to 2030, costing the global economy \u00a37 trillion in lost productivity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Increasingly, however, Millennials \u2013 those who reached adulthood around the turn of the century \u2013 are filling these gaps. A <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.elance-odesk.com\/millennial-majority-workforce\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">recent study from Elance<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> found that 28% of Millennials reported already being in management positions, and two-thirds say that they expect to be in management by 2024. There are solid reasons behind the success of this group \u2013 they are the most tech-savvy and entrepreneurial generation yet. Hiring managers say that Millennials are<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">technologically adept, quick learners, and have skills that prior generations do not.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Millennials Aren\u2019t Satisfied <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The bad news is that most aren\u2019t happy in their current jobs. &nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pwc.com\/m1\/en\/services\/consulting\/documents\/millennials-at-work.pdf\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A PWC study<\/span> <\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">found that <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">72% of Millennials feel that they made some sort of trade-off to get a job, and 38% of currently employed Millennials are actively looking for a different role, with 43% open to offers. It\u2019s no surprise, then, that 60% of Millennials will leave their jobs within three years<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> In fact, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.elance-odesk.com\/millennial-majority-workforce\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">the Elance study <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">quoted above found that an amazing 79% would consider quitting their regular job and working for themselves<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">in the future.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Millennials Desire Greater Flexibility <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">What is it that this group wants from its workplace? Well, work is certainly something that Millennials take seriously \u2013 <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/sponsored\/allstate\/attention-employers-millennials-have-made-their-demands\/219\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">an Allstate study <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">found that 91% of Millennials considered achieving career success to be necessary to living a good life, and <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/millennials-want-to-be-connected-to-their-coworkers-2013-6?IR=T\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">a report from PGI<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> stated that 75% of Millennials said that mentors were crucial to success. However, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pwc.com\/gx\/en\/services\/people-organisation\/publications\/nextgen-study.html\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">an internal PWC study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> found that \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Millennials believed that productivity should not be measured by the number of hours worked at the office, but by the output of the work performed,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201d and <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/millennials-want-to-be-connected-to-their-coworkers-2013-6?IR=T\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">PGI\u2019s report<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> found that 81% of Millennials think they should be able to<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">make their own schedule<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In other words, the old dictum that says work is an activity and not a location has never been more true. The fact that remote working technology now makes it easy to log into office systems from home or a local caf\u00e9 only fuels Millennials\u2019 desire for greater flexibility. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">These findings have huge implications for those who are reshaping their organisations (or advising others on how to do so) in order to attract and retain this critical but, at times, disaffected group of employees. Productivity needs to move from inputs (showing up in the office) to outputs (a clearly defined set of targets, monitored more closely than has perhaps previously been the case). Managers need to become mentors to their line reports, actively encouraging and shaping their career development. And every organisation needs to embrace the flexible working options opened up by technology. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">All of this is, of course, easier said than done.
