{"id":59535,"date":"2023-06-21T06:00:24","date_gmt":"2023-06-21T05:00:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bullhorn.com\/uk\/?p=59535"},"modified":"2023-06-21T11:50:17","modified_gmt":"2023-06-21T10:50:17","slug":"future-workforce-will-red-blue-green-yellow-world-2030","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bullhorn.com\/uk\/blog\/future-workforce-will-red-blue-green-yellow-world-2030\/","title":{"rendered":"Future of the workforce: Will it be a Red, Blue, Green or Yellow World in 2030?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>This blog was originally published in 2017 but has since been updated with recent developments and insights into today&#8217;s world of work.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I recently read a thought-provoking <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pwc.com\/gx\/en\/services\/people-organisation\/publications\/workforce-of-the-future.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">report<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from PWC on what the future of the workforce may look like in 2030. However, to provide some context to these several years of future predictions, let\u2019s jump back 13 years from today. Back in 2004, there were no iPhones, Netflix, YouTube, or mainstream access to Facebook. LinkedIn was a year old, and working remotely was rare. Furthermore, cloud technology was just emerging\u2014much like how Artificial Intelligence is today!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We are living through a fundamental transformation in the way we work. The emergence of AI is impacting the skills that businesses are looking for in their people (37% of people are worried about AI putting jobs at risk), the study (including a survey of 10,000 people in China, the US, the UK, India, and Germany) postulates four possible Worlds of Work in 2030: Red, Blue, Green, and Yellow.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Red World is all about speed and innovation.<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The focus is on getting like-minded people together and bringing new ideas and skills to the market quickly.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There will be a need for nimble, adaptive talent\u2014(60 percent think \u2018few people will have stable, long term employment in the future\u2014) working on new products, who are then comfortable shifting on to the next opportunity.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Developing and launching quickly will be prioritised<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Technology will be used to connect people across the world to enable the best brains and ideas to be used whenever needed.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>In the Blue World, corporate is King.<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s a huge divide between the winners and losers\u2014 big capitalism on steroids.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can expect a core group of individuals that work at the Blue World to be complimented by a contingent workforce.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Skills will be brought in as and when needed.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Large parts of existing jobs will either be replaced or augmented by technology-70% would consider using treatments to enhance their brain and body if this improved employment prospects in the future) with talent being identified very early and brought through the business.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>In the Green World, the prime focus is society, corporate responsibility, and sustainability.<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Workforces are attracted to an organisation because they believe in its mission (23% say that doing a \u2018job that makes a difference\u2019 is most important to their career). This will lead to a rise in green jobs, with an emphasis on conscious roles with a positive impact on the future.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Technology is used to ensure there is minimal impact on the environment and those around them as well as to enhance the scarce resources those businesses have. Artificial Intelligence will have a big impact on the future of green jobs, including enabling the workforce to accomplish more with less environmental footprint.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>In the Yellow World,<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong> humanity is hugely valued<\/strong>\u2014(73 percent think technology can never replace the human mind.)<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The focus is on smaller organisations thinking about social responsibility, fairness, and like-minded people coming together to execute their craft (25% say an ideal employer is one with ideals that match their own).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The workforce won\u2019t be strongly affiliated with a particular employer nor tied into a 9-5, five days a week.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Technology will enable people with ideas and aspirations to start their own businesses with a lower barrier to entry.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So what do these future worlds mean for employers and employees now?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The reality is the future is here today, and organisations need to start looking at what the future looks like for them. Business leaders should ask themselves how they should react if the world becomes more green or more blue. Existing workers shouldn\u2019t be thinking as the job they do, but the bundle of skills they have. The key is flexibility, adaptability, and lifelong learning \u201474% are ready to learn new skills or completely retrain to remain employable in the future.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Key takeaways for leaders:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Act now: This isn\u2019t about some \u2018far future\u2019 of work &#8211; change is already happening and accelerating.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No regrets and bets: Plan for a dynamic rather than static future. Make \u2018no regrets\u2019 moves that work with most scenarios &#8211; but you\u2019ll need to make some \u2018bets\u2019 too.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Make a bigger leap: Don\u2019t be constrained by your starting point. You might need a more radical change than just a small step away from where you are today.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Own the automation debate: A depth of understanding and keen insight into the changing technology landscape is a must.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People not jobs: Organisations can\u2019t protect jobs that are made redundant by technology &#8211; but have a responsibility to their people. Nurture agility, adaptability and re-skilling.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Build a clear narrative: Anxiety kills confidence and the willingness to innovate.
