Fuse Recruitment, established in 2010, was founded with a vision to deliver recruitment services that equally address the needs of both candidates and businesses. The Fuse team specialises in sourcing talent for roles across various sectors, including insurance, wealth management, manufacturing, infrastructure, and utilities throughout Australia.

A process problem

For a recruitment agency built on relationships, Fuse had a process problem. Most of their consultants’ time was being consumed at the very top of the funnel. Doing activities such as sourcing large candidate volumes, conducting screening calls, writing job ads, updating CVs, and chasing candidates who had gone quiet. The candidates at the bottom of the funnel, the ones actually ready to place, weren’t able to be prioritised.

“We’re spending 80% of our time doing that (lower level tasks) and only twenty percent of that time doing what adds value,” said Mathew Westcott, Managing Director at Fuse Recruitment.

Screening candidates became one of the biggest bottlenecks. It was time-heavy, inconsistent, and often deprioritised when desks got busy. The result was a lot of activity with very little forward momentum.

Database visibility compounded the problem. Fuse had years of strong candidate data sitting in Bullhorn, but traditional Boolean and keyword search meant the same familiar names kept surfacing. When qualified candidates with non-linear career paths or different terminology remained unseen.

Fuse didn’t try to fix consultant behaviour. They fixed the process by combining Bullhorn Amplify, Search and Match, and Automation to eliminate bottlenecks at every stage of the funnel.

Flipping the funnel through AI screening and Automation

Fuse solved this by combining AI-assisted screening in Amplify and Automation to create a process that runs without consultant involvement until it’s genuinely needed.

When a candidate applies or is identified, AI-assisted screening handles the first layer of qualification automatically. Amplify then steps in to summarise and structure the insights from that screening into a consistent, easy-to-read candidate profile that is scored and ranked so consultants can immediately see who needs their attention. Automation carries the process forward: updating the candidate record in Bullhorn, moving suitable candidates to the next workflow stage, and sending alerts to consultants only when human judgement is required.

The framework is fully customised by role type. For blue-collar positions, screening covers practical qualifications looking at key factors like availability, licences, safety certifications, and site readiness. For white-collar roles, it goes deeper, probing breadth of experience, scope of previous responsibilities, and decision-making capability. The questions and experience differ, but the underlying process is the same.

The result is that candidates keep moving forward even when consultants are focused elsewhere. Only the right candidates who are qualified, engaged, and ready to move surface for consultant outreach.
“AI captures and scores the details; automation is just the next step, and then recruiters only step in now where the data is cleaner, clearer, prioritised,” said Westcott.

My goal is to increase efficiency and speed to market while making workflows easier. If Bullhorn's AI features have given back 15 hours a week across 40–50 consultants, that's a significant amount of time.

800% uplift in completed screens

By removing the friction from screening and follow-ups, the volume of screens completed has increased dramatically. Candidates who fit the criteria move forward automatically; those who don’t are filtered early. “Now, we’re screening and qualifying in a quarter of the time. So less experienced consultants are servicing more tasks,” said Westcott.

Roughly 80% of consultant effort now sits at the bottom of the funnel. Candidates are actively progressing and clients ready to move rather than being absorbed by top-of-funnel admin.

Finding the unseen candidates through Search and Match

Rather than building complex Boolean strings, consultants now search in plain English, for example “Find me an insurance broker with Tier One qualifications in Geelong.” Amplify ranks candidates by relevance and reruns the search daily as new candidates enter the database, so strong matches are never missed just because the timing was slightly off.

“We’re actually reaching back to those people now, pulling people out of the database that we just hadn’t seen in a very long time,” said Westcott.

56% of placements now come from the Bullhorn database

Search and Match has driven approximately a 25% uplift in successful shortlists and role outcomes, a figure that continues to climb as adoption increases. “When the list came to the top five or six, they were top five or six really qualified,” said Westcott.

Giving time back through custom prompts and Amplify

Each consultant now has an AI assistant embedded directly inside Bullhorn, handling the administrative tasks that used to pull them away from clients and candidates. Bullhorn Amplify helps consultants to write job ads, improve candidate CVs, summarise profiles, drafting outreach, and documenting reference checks. Custom prompts ensure every output follows Fuse’s preferred structure, tone, and quality standards providing consistently, across every desk.

“We now have a resource that can write profiles and handle tasks efficiently. A consultant can ask it to review 15 candidates, call them, determine their suitability, and update CVs with minimal effort or interaction. Plus, it ensures consistency in the quality of what we’re delivering,” said Westcott.

Saving 15 hours per consultant, per week

Custom Amplify prompts and automation have removed sustained admin burden from day-to-day workflows. “They’re able to work on more roles now because they’re just getting through the process so much quicker,” said Westcott.

It [Amplify] is exactly what our consultants have been asking for — their own assistant that gives them the support they've always wanted, without adding cost to the business.
